iPad 3G Teardown

iPAd 3G iPad Teardown Dissect Open

iFixit is at it again, revealing what’s inside the iPad 3G on day 1. Posted below is the highlights of the difference between an iPad and iPad 3G internally. You can check out the whole teardown at iFixit.

  1. The immediate visible difference is the inclusion of a black plastic RF window on top of the iPad for better antenna reception.
  2. The black RF window significantly changes the opening procedure. You cannot start separating the display using the notches on the top (à la Wi-Fi version), since that will undoubtedly break the RF window. You have to start from the right side and gingerly proceed to the top and bottom of the iPad.
  3. There are actually FIVE antennas in this iPad: Two antennas handle the cell reception — one is in the RF window on top, the other attaches to the LCD frame. A single GPS antenna is also housed in the RF window on top. Just like the iPad Wi-Fi, there are two antennas that handle Wi-Fi / Bluetooth connectivity, one in the Apple logo and another to the left of the dock connector.
  4. You heard that right, folks: Apple looks to be using the entire LCD frame as an antenna!
  5. Who would’ve thought: Apple uses the same 3G baseband processor in both the iPhone 3GS and the iPad 3G.

As expected of iFixit, the iPad has already been ripped part by part in a more detailed manner just shortly after the launch. You can read the full instructions for the iPad dissection at iFixit.

Some interesting facts from the teardown:

  • The battery consists of “two separate 3.75V lithium polymer cells wired in parallel for such ample battery life.”
  • Not new but the 3G iPad is really just the WiFi iPad with added 3G components.
  • “The dual speakers provide stereo sound. Two small sealed channels direct sound toward three audio ports carved into the bottom edge of the iPad.”
  • The dual battery with the back cover weighs a whooping 148 grams.

Quick iPad Teardown by the FCC

iPad-Internals-Inside-Tear-Down-iFixit

Nope, not iFixit, they will have a detailed teardown of the iPad tomorrow.

Thee FCC has dissected the iPad and released photos of the iPad innards. The giant black piece in the center is the battery, which explains the prolonged battery life talked about by the early reviewers. And you can clearly see the amount of space the internals can use to breath, requiring no fan and no heating issues. You can check out the full gallery at engadget.
