A Look at forthcoming Penguin iPad Books

Penguin-iPad-Books-Apps

Penguin Group CEO John Makinson revealed some of the company’s forthcoming titles that’s coming to the iPad at the FT Digital Media & Broadcasting Conference in London yesterday [paidContent:UK].

“We will be embedding audio, video and streaming in to everything we do. The .epub format, which is the standard for ebooks at the present, is designed to support traditional narrative text, but not this cool stuff that we’re now talking about.”

As shown in the video below, the “books” resemble more like applications than traditional e-books, just what we would imagine books to be on the iPad, “very interactive learning experiences.” In fact, Makinson says that most of the “books” will be sold through the App Store as opposed to the iBooks Store.

“So for the time being at least we’ll be creating a lot of our content as applications, for sale on app stores and HTML, rather than in ebooks. The definition of the book itself is up for grabs.”

When asked about the 30/70 Split with Publishers, Makinson replied with, “this is better than the equivalent print agency model, in which publishers let retailers keep 50 percent.”

The ABC rushes to bring its content on the iPad

It goes without saying that the apps is what will make or break the iPad’s success. According to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald, The ABC (not to be confused with America’s ABC) has spoken with tech companies to bring content on the iPad this year.

It was revealed that Adobe was approached by the ABC to develop content for the company, seeking a similar partnership to the one with Wired. Even though Apple blacklisted flash technology on the iPad, it looks like companies are taking advantage of the immanent Action Script 3 to iPhone/iPad port.

”They think they have a lot of interesting content that they’d like to get out to tablet devices,” said Jeremy Clark senior experience design manager of Adobe.

Abigail Thomas, head of strategic development in ABC Innovation, confirms their talk with Adobe. No detail was given as to what The ABC wants to build for the iPad.

iPad SKUs Shows Up in Best Buy Inventory System?

iPad-best_buy_dummy_skus

A tipster on the MacRumors forum leaked what appears to be a legit shot of Best Buy’s internal inventory system, showing 3 new dummy Apple SKUs in the ‘Mobile Computing’ category. My best guess is that these mysterious placeholders could very will be the 3 models of WiFi-only iPads that’s slated for a late March launch. However, we can’t rule out the possibility that these are for the rumored refreshed Core i7-based MacBook Pros.

In addition to this piece of tidbit, we have been hearing that Best Buy will be carrying the iPad. Therefore there’s a good chance that the placeholders are indeed for the iPad.

SKUs: 9755419, 9755395, 9755322.

Norton 360 to support the iPad, sort off

norton-360-for-ipad-iphone-android-1

Symantec published a press release today detailing its upcoming Norton 360 iPhone/iPad app. No, it won’t protect your iPad from those pesky “viruses, Trojans, spyware, and other threats.” Nor will it “Warn you of dangerous downloads” with Norton Download Insight. But what it will do is give you access to your backup storage from Norton 360 or Norton online backup.

The beta version of the app is planned to be released on the App Store for free in a couple of weeks.

Although the app is free, you’ll have to shell out $79 for Norton 360 Version 4.0 which comes with a 2GB online storage. Alternatively, you can get a 25GB online backup account for $50.

There’s always other cheaper or Free options such as DropBox (2 Gigs Free) or MobileMe.

Wired Magazine coming to the iPad by Summer

jeremy-clark-at-ted-iPad-Wired

At TED on Friday, Wired Magazine Editor-in-Chief Chris Anderson announced that Wired will be launching the iPad Wired Magazine App by this summer.

“Im from the media world, Anderson told the audience and as you may have heard, we have lots of questions about our future. The good news I think we found part of the answer. We think this is a game changer.”

The attendees at TED got a demo of the up coming application, which won’t look too different from the iPad Wired App concept that was shown last november in New York. (Below)

And according to a report by Cult of Mac, apparently, the working prototype was built on Adobe Air, which like Flash is not supported on the iPad, so either they develop a native /iPad App or port the app over from AIR via Adobe Flash CS5.

No word on pricing or exact release date, but the digital version of the Wired magazine will likely have a cheaper subscription plan vs. the print.

iPad to have Price Cuts if Sales Lags?

iPad_E_wallpaper

According to a report on the Wall Street Journey, Apple management will be “nimble” on iPad pricing, possibly issuing a price cut on the iPad if initial sales do not meet Apple’s expectations. This sounds like what happened when Apple released the original iPhone back in 2007, about 2 months after the launch, the original $599 price was down to $399. Which Apple offered a $100 Apple store credit to all the early iPhone adaptors. Could this be happening all over again with the iPad?

Although the iPad is already at a very competitive pricing, we wouldn’t mind saving some bucks.

Hutchison Austria to offer discounted iPad on Data Contract

Hutchison-Austria-ipad-contract-priceAccording to Berthold Thoma, CEO of Hutchison Austria, The carrier will be offering the iPad for folks in Austria. Purchasers willing to be bond to a 2-year data contract (29.90 Euro, 5GB/Month) will get a 333 Euro/$455 discount. Frankly we still don’t know international pricing for the iPad, so the final price after the discount is a mystery.

In addition, given that the initial shipment of iPads are Wi-Fi only, the carrier is throwing in the Huawei i-Mo 3G modem to the deal, a wireless wifi router.

Chinese Manufacturer admits to ‘Cloning iPad’ but Threatens to Sue Apple?

apple-slate-or-tablet-clone-first

It has only been a mere week since Apple unveiled the iPad to the world. Now a chinese manufacturer called “Shenzhen Great Loong Brother Industrial” is claiming that its P88 tablet’s design was totally copied and cloned by Apple since the P88 has been on the market for about 6 months now. But if you ask me, it looks like P88 cloned the iPhone/iPod Touch design.

In a recent interview by Spanish Newspaper El Mundo, Xiaolong Wu CEO of the Chinese manufacturer was quoted saying, “We are considering legal action, but we cannot do much in the United States. But if Apple brings the iPad to China, we will be forced to denounce them, because it will certainly affect our sales,” That was a rough translation by Google Translate.

Wu says that the iPad and P88 are practically “completely identical” and that Apple copied their multitouch screen, the design of the housing and bezel of the P88.

Both tablets may look alike in some ways, however the internals are completely different. The P88 sports a 10.2? non-mutitouch screen, 250gig hard drive, a gig of RAM, etc.

iPadInsider actually posted about the P88 possibly being the first iPad clone back in November of 09. And at the time when we wrote the article, via Google Translate — we caught them describing the P88 as an “Imitation Apple handwritten notebook.” The same page now leads to nothing. The company was obviously stating that as a selling point for the device. So can they really sue Apple?

Note: The company went with a plastic looking bezel (Image above) for a short while before going back to a chrome bezel for the P88. Likely to differentiate itself from Apple’s iPhone.

Freelancing with the iPad — A Dream!

iPad-calender-freelancing

Last article I ripped into the decisions Apple made with regards to missing critical features and capabilities of the iPad, now let us take a look at why the iPad is truly going to revolutionize the way on-the-go entrepreneurs are going to interact with their clients, co-workers, and establish a visual and interactive ubiquity with the world around them.

First, let us reflect quickly on the vision Apple has so elegantly set forth in our world with regards to usability, interactivity, and simplicity in design and in function of their entire line of product. The iPhone was a shining example of Apple’s direction, a user experience so easy, fluid, and intuitive, that children and grandparents alike are just as easily learning to use the iPhone like the pro users you, and I are. The iMac, in its simplicity, is an all-in-one desktop that supports its sealed-in hard-to-tweak stature with a stable OS, lots of hardware performance, and incredible connectivity and software options. The iPad is the next evolution, the next logical step for Apple to take, as it heads into a greater revolution of intuitive interactivity and content management.

iPad to have video calling, SMS and file downloads?

ipad-sdk-page-video-calling-sms

The iPhone OS 3.2 beta SDK has been available for just about 2 days now. And today, engadget has uncovered some interesting groundwork being laid in iPhone OS 3.2 that could possibly hint at future software features and the next generation of iPad.

According to a trusted source of engadget, there’s some basic support within iPhone OS 3.2 for video calling, which explains the empty space at where a front facing camera would have been perfect in the leaked iPad photo. Front facing camera in the iPad 2?

“We’re told that there are hooks to accept and decline a video conference, flip a video feed (which suggests a front-facing camera) and — most importantly — run the video call in either full screen mode or in just a portion of the screen. That means you’ll be able to chat and do other things at the same time, which could mean there’s at least some type of multitasking going on here. “

front-facing-camera-iPad-hole

There’s also some code buried in iPhone OS 3.2 suggesting support for file download in the browser and mysteriously, SMS and phone capabilities. However, the SMS and Phone part as noted by our editor Christopher Kirk, could simply be some left over iPhone code. Only time will tell.
